Why plant variety matters
Counting plants is a simple way to eat more widely.
Editorial draft — awaiting review by a registered nutrition professional. This is general information, not medical advice.
Emerging research
An analysis from the American Gut Project observed that people who reported eating more than 30 different plant types a week had more diverse gut microbiomes than those eating 10 or fewer. This is an observational association, not proof of cause and effect.
A practical idea
Regardless of the research, eating a wider variety of vegetables, pulses, grains, herbs, nuts and seeds is consistent with established healthy-eating advice. Soup is an easy place to add three or four extra plants at once.
