The limits of microbiome testing

Why we don't offer gut tests or scores — and why you might be sceptical of them too.

Editorial draft — awaiting review by a registered nutrition professional. This is general information, not medical advice.

Emerging research

Consumer gut microbiome tests analyse a stool sample and often report scores or recommendations. Microbiome science is genuinely exciting, but there is not yet an agreed definition of a “healthy” microbiome.

Results can vary between companies and between samples from the same person, and most tests are not designed to diagnose any condition.

Our approach

Souplement doesn't calculate a gut-health score. We focus on things that are well supported: eating more fibre and a wider variety of plants, in food you actually enjoy.

If you have digestive symptoms, speak to your GP or a registered dietitian.
